When winter strikes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, a lot of them can be tracked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself a bit of time to look through and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last two years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system could be more cost efficient.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises at the end of their life. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies might notice more symptoms. A couple other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these signs sound like what you are feeling with your furnace, it might be time to start researching a new system.
